Gold Mining Makes Mega Money

March 21, 2013

As one of the oldest geological formations on earth, the Guiana Shield is also the continuation of West Africa’s Gold Coast. Hence, it is a highly mineralised region with large deposits of gold, diamonds, bauxite and uranium. Today, formal and informal gold exploitation are important contributors to the local economy. However, in the absence of effective regulatory measures, the bounty may turn into a nightmare, in particular for Amerindian communities, the environment and security.

This opinion, by Wouter J. Veening, President/Chairman and Géraud de Ville, Researcher at the Institute for Environmental Security, analyses the threats associated with gold mining in the Guiana Shield.
