Fish, as a protein source, is a very important part of the diet for many people. This is more so for indigenous communities. Changes in fishing technology means that community members can catch more fish in less time and can also use the surplus for financial incentives. However, changes in fishing technology, if not controlled properly, can lead to over-exploitation of the fish resource and have negative consequences for the communities that use this resource. Like the communities of the North Rupununi, the Wayana People, believe that using traditional techniques/technologies and knowledge ensures the sustainable uses their fish resource.
